ABOUT
About this spot
Tottori Sand Dunes, the signature attraction of Tottori Prefecture, is one of Japan's largest coastal dunes, stretching 2.4 km north to south and 16 km east to west. Built up over a long span of time, the dunes are patterned by the wind off the Sea of Japan into geometric "wind ripples," and the panoramic view of the Sea of Japan from the "Umanose" (Horse's Back) ridge, with its dramatic difference in elevation, is simply stunning. The scenery changes constantly with the season and the time of day, so every visit brings a fresh sense of wonder. Beyond leisurely strolls across the sand, there are plenty of activities for feeling nature with your whole body, such as camel rides for souvenir photos, sandboarding down the vast slopes, and paragliding. Nearby, the Sand Museum, which displays sand sculptures, a world first, lets you enjoy both art and nature. A must-see scenic spot for once in a lifetime, it is ideal for an active trip with family or friends, as well as for a romantic date watching the quiet sunset or a solo journey.
