ABOUT
About this spot
Standing on a cliff at the westernmost tip of the Shimane Peninsula, Izumo Hinomisaki Lighthouse is a historic lighthouse built in 1903. At 43.65 m, it is the tallest stone lighthouse in Japan, and because of its historical value it has been designated a national Important Cultural Property. The contrast between the white stone of its walls and the vast Sea of Japan is truly a spectacular sight. Inside the lighthouse, a spiral staircase of 163 steps leads up to the observation deck at the top. The 360-degree panorama from there is breathtaking, and on a clear day you can see as far as the distant Oki Islands. The sunset viewed while feeling the sea breeze is also exceptional. Walking paths have been developed around the area, and strolling the coastline lined with strange rock formations of columnar joints is recommended. A few minutes away by car is the beautiful vermilion-lacquered Hinomisaki Shrine, and visiting both together is the standard course. Work up a pleasant sweat while feeling the history, then take in the wonderful view at the end - this is a spot for a fulfilling time.
