ABOUT

About this spot

Located at the western tip of the Shimane Peninsula, Hinomisaki Shrine is a strikingly beautiful shrine whose vivid vermilion buildings stand out against the blue sea and sky. The grounds hold two main sanctuaries, the lower shrine Hishizumi no Miya and the upper shrine Kami no Miya, which enshrine Amaterasu Omikami and Susanoo no Mikoto respectively. According to tradition, "while Ise Grand Shrine protects Japan by day, Hinomisaki Shrine protects Japan by night," and it has long been deeply revered as a deity that wards off misfortune and brings good matches. The present buildings were constructed on the orders of the third Tokugawa shogun, Iemitsu, and are decorated with majestic carvings reminiscent of Nikko Toshogu. All of them are designated Important Cultural Properties. Their stately architectural beauty is irresistible to history fans. Nearby are Hinomisaki Lighthouse, the tallest stone lighthouse in Japan, and a coastline of rugged cliffs, both well worth a stroll after your visit. About 20 minutes by car from Izumo Taisha, it is easy to reach and a power spot you should not miss when visiting Izumo, the land of mythology. At dusk, the setting sun bathes the grounds in gold, creating an even more sacred sight.
