ABOUT

About this spot

Iwami Ginzan in Shimane Prefecture is a leading Japanese mining site that produced enough silver in the 16th and 17th centuries to help sustain the world economy. Inscribed as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site, it is highly valued as an industrial heritage that developed in harmony with nature. The highlight is Ryugenji Mabu, a former mine tunnel where silver was actually extracted. In the cool air, you can see up close the chisel marks left by the miners of the time and feel the breath of history. The neighboring Omori district is a beautiful area lined with red-tiled roofs and traditional buildings. Stylish cafes and shops housed in restored samurai residences and old private homes are scattered throughout, making it a pleasant place to spend a relaxed time while exploring the history. Rental bicycles are recommended for getting around, but walking slowly and feeling the weight of history lets you discover even deeper charms. It is a popular destination for everyone from solo travelers to families and couples.
