ABOUT
About this spot
Tsuwano Castle Ruins in Tsuwano Town, Shimane Prefecture, is a mountain castle site built at the 367-meter summit, among the largest in Japan. No buildings remain today, but the splendid stone walls rebuilt from the medieval to early modern periods convey its former grandeur, and the site is designated a national Historic Site. Using the sightseeing lift is convenient for reaching the castle. After enjoying an aerial stroll of about 5 minutes, you walk a maintained mountain path for about 15 minutes, the view opens up, and you arrive at the main enclosure site that seems to float in the sky. The red-tiled townscape of the "Little Kyoto of San'in" seen from there is simply superb. With luck, you may even see the SL Yamaguchi steam locomotive running below, puffing smoke. On early mornings from autumn to winter, a "sea of clouds" sometimes covers the whole town, and you may be able to see the enchanting "castle in the sky." Whether you immerse yourself in history alone, or enjoy the scenery on a hike-like outing with family and friends, it is a spot that cleanses the heart.
