ABOUT

About this spot

Sada Shrine (Sada Jinja) is in Kashima-cho, Matsue City, Shimane Prefecture. It was the ninomiya, or second shrine, of Izumo Province and a former national shrine, and it is mentioned in the Izumo Fudoki. The central hall enshrines Sada Mikoo Okami, identified by the shrine with Sarutahiko, while the north hall enshrines Amaterasu and the south hall Susanoo. Its main attraction is the main shrine: three halls in the Taisha-zukuri style stand side by side, a layout called "santono heiritsu". They were built in 1807 and are designated Important Cultural Properties. The shrine is also known for Sada Shin Noh, held every year on September 24 and 25 around the Goza-gae ritual. It is said to have begun in 1608, when a Noh-style form was brought back from Kyoto, and it combines ritual dances with masked mythological dramas. It is a nationally designated Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property and was inscribed on UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2011. The Kamiarisai festival is held from November 20 to 25. From JR Matsue Station, take the Ichibata Bus toward Emori for about 28 minutes to Sada Jinja-mae. Allow about an hour.
