ABOUT

About this spot

Enshrined in an atmospheric fishing town at the eastern tip of the Shimane Peninsula, Miho Shrine is the head shrine of Ebisu shrines across Japan, revered as a guardian deity of business prosperity and maritime safety. Okuninushi no Okami (Daikoku-sama) of Izumo Taisha and Kotoshironushi no Kami (Ebisu-sama) of Miho Shrine are father and son, and it is said that visiting both shrines, a pilgrimage known as "Ebisu-Daikoku Ryomairi," brings you even better fortune in relationships. Within the grounds stands a main hall built in a unique architectural style called "Mihozukuri," designated an Important Cultural Property. The sight of the two sanctuaries standing side by side is magnificent, and you can feel the depth of history. Because of the legend that Kotoshironushi loved music, the shrine is also known as the god of musical instruments, and a great many instruments have been dedicated here since ancient times. In front of the shrine gate, the Aoishi Tatami Street, which retains the atmosphere of the Edo period, invites a nostalgic stroll. Where the scent of the sea mingles with a solemn stillness, this is a perfect spot for solo travelers seeking calm or for tracing history with someone special.
