ABOUT
About this spot
Mihonoseki Lighthouse, standing on Jizosaki at the eastern end of the Shimane Peninsula, is a historic stone lighthouse built in the 31st year of Meiji. Its solid construction, designed by a French engineer, is distinctive, and for its beauty it has been selected as one of the 100 Best Lighthouses of the World and one of Japan's 50 Lighthouses, and is designated a nationally Important Cultural Property. The contrast of the white lighthouse against the blue sea and sky is breathtaking. From the observation deck you can look out over the vast Sea of Japan, and on a clear day see the Oki Islands and, to the east, the famous Mt. Hoki-Daisen. At Mihonoseki Lighthouse Buffet, a converted former lighthouse keeper's residence, you can enjoy dishes and cafe menu items made with seasonal local ingredients while looking out at the Sea of Japan through the windows. It is also popular as a walking route combined with nearby Miho Shrine, and we highly recommend it to those who want to experience historical atmosphere and the openness of nature at the same time.
