ABOUT

About this spot

Amano Iwato Shrine in Takachiho Town, Miyazaki Prefecture, is a sacred place where the legend of "Amano Iwato Gakure," one of the most famous episodes in Japanese mythology, is passed down. It enshrines the cave "Amano Iwato," where Amaterasu Omikami is said to have hidden, as its object of worship, and preserves an ancient form of worship without a main hall. The highlight is the sacred "Amano Iwato" seen across the river from the West Main Hall. With a Shinto priest's guidance, you can worship it from the worship area, which is normally off-limits. Also not to be missed is "Amano Yasugawara," about a 10-minute walk from the shrine. It is a huge cave where the eight million gods are said to have gathered to consult, and its countless piled stones create a mystical atmosphere. The grounds, wrapped in rich greenery and the murmur of clear streams, are filled with a stillness that makes you forget daily bustle. It is a perfect spot for history lovers, as well as for those who want to refresh in mind and body or feel the world of mythology firsthand. Whether on a trip with friends, a solo journey, or a family stroll, visitors of every generation will find deep inspiration and peace.
