ABOUT

About this spot

Udo Jingu, whose vermilion main hall nestles inside a sea cave in a cliff facing the Pacific Ocean, is a spectacular power spot not to be missed when sightseeing in Miyazaki. Its distinctive "descending shrine" style requires you to go down stone steps from the approach to worship, and the contrast between the blue sea spreading before you and the vermilion shrine is stunningly beautiful. Its famous attraction is the "Unudama," lucky stones you throw with a wish toward a hollow in the back of a turtle-shaped rock (Kameishi). Men throw with the left hand and women with the right, and it is said that if the stone lands in the hollow, your wish will come true. There is also the "Ochichi-iwa" (Breast Rock), said to have been left by Toyotamahime-no-Mikoto, the mother of the main deity, for nursing her child. Many visitors, including couples, families, and groups of women, come seeking blessings for safe childbirth, child-rearing, and matchmaking. Why not spend a soul-cleansing moment enveloped in the mystical air of the cave while listening to the sound of the waves?
