A beautiful highland at an altitude of 1,200 m in Kirishima-Kinkowan National Park. Surrounded by Japan's oldest national park, it offers year-round activity, including seasonal scenery, volcanic lake walks, serious hiking, hot springs and even outdoor ice skating in winter, making it one of Japan's top nature spots.

ABOUT

About this spot

Spreading across the northern part of the Kirishima mountain range, Ebino Highland is one of Kyushu's leading trekking areas, alive with untouched nature. In spring, Nokaido and Miyama Kirishima azaleas, found growing wild only here in the world, color the mountainsides; summer brings fresh highland breezes, autumn blazing foliage, and winter a snowy landscape and rime ice rare for Kyushu. A variety of trekking courses for beginners to advanced hikers are maintained. The 'Ike-meguri Nature Trail' is especially popular: a relatively flat, easy walk around the cobalt-blue Fudo Pond, Byakushi Pond and Rokkannon Mi-ike Pond. For a more serious experience, climbing Mt. Karakuni (1,700 m) is recommended. From the summit, the power of the crater and, on a clear day, a magnificent panorama reaching all the way to Sakurajima await. Nearby is the historic Ebino Kogen Onsen, where you can ease your fatigue in free-flowing natural spring water after your activities. From a family drive to camping with friends, or a solo trip to enjoy nature quietly, it promises blissful moments that make you forget everyday life however you spend your time.
