ABOUT
About this spot
Sekinoo Falls in Miyakonojo, Miyazaki Prefecture, is a breathtaking scenic spot made up of three waterfalls: the Odaki (Great Falls), Otodaki (Male Falls), and Medaki (Female Falls). The main Odaki is 40 m wide and 18 m high, and has been selected as one of Japan's 100 Best Waterfalls. From the suspension bridge spanning the front of the falls, you can watch the water thunder down at close range and feel the rising spray and refreshing negative ions all over your body. The falls' greatest highlight lies farther upstream: the Sekinoo Potholes. Erosion over countless years has carved innumerable round holes into the bedrock, creating a formation among the largest of its kind in the world, designated a National Natural Monument. The strange sight spreading across the entire riverbed is truly art created by nature over a vast span of time. Walking paths have been laid out around the area, and a stroll through the changing scenery of each season is a perfect way to refresh. In autumn especially, the contrast between the falls and the vivid foliage is beautiful, making it an ideal photo spot. Whether you are on a family drive, a trip with friends, or a quiet solo getaway, this is a landmark worth visiting in any situation.
