ABOUT
About this spot
Takachiho Gorge is a mystical canyon formed when pyroclastic flows from ancient eruptions of Mount Aso cooled rapidly and were eroded over a long span of years. Columnar-jointed cliffs 80 to 100 meters high continue for about 7 km, and their power is sure to overwhelm you. The top highlight is Manai Falls, selected as one of Japan's 100 Best Waterfalls. Rental boats that take you close to the falls are extremely popular, and you can feel the fresh greenery or autumn leaves reflected on the water and the spray falling from the cliffs. Walking paths are also well maintained, and the roughly 1 km course offers varied scenery such as the Sennin no Byobu-iwa rock and the 'Takachiho Three Bridges,' where three bridges appear stacked together. At night, Manai Falls is lit up, wrapping the gorge in an enchanting atmosphere different from daytime. Known as a land of myth, the area is also famous as a power spot, ideal for trips with family, friends or loved ones, and also for quietly feeling the energy of nature alone.
