ABOUT
About this spot
Obi Castle, in Nichinan City, Miyazaki Prefecture, is the symbol of "Little Kyoto of Kyushu," a town that preserves the atmosphere of the Edo period. Flourishing as a stronghold of the Ito clan from the Sengoku period through the Edo period, the site offers imposing stone walls and a tranquil space surrounded by Obi cedars more than 100 years old. A highlight is the majestic Otemon Gate, restored in 1978 (Showa 53), whose imposing presence is striking. Beyond the gate, mossy stone walls and a lovely avenue of cedars greet you with a different look in every season. Within the castle grounds, sites such as the Obi Castle History Museum and the Matsuo no Maru, which evokes daily life of the time, are sure to delight history lovers. The area around the castle is a beautiful castle town designated as an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings. We recommend strolling along the samurai residence street, where carp swim in the water channels, with local specialties such as "Obi-ten" and thick-cut tamagoyaki in hand. Whether you are on a family history outing, a photogenic trip with friends, or a quiet solo holiday, you are sure to enjoy a deeply satisfying time.
