ABOUT
About this spot
Spreading across Saito City, Miyazaki Prefecture, the Saitobaru Burial Mounds are a historic park of Japan's leading scale, with more than 300 mounds built between the 3rd and 7th centuries. Viewing keyhole-shaped and round mounds up close, just like those in history textbooks, you can feel the romance of ancient Japan. Beyond their historical value, the beautiful seasonal flowers are a great charm. In spring, about 2,000 cherry trees and 300,000 rapeseed plants come together, creating a stunning scene of contrasting pink and yellow. In autumn, 3 million cosmos blanket the land, captivating many visitors and photographers. On the grounds is the Miyazaki Prefectural Saitobaru Archaeological Museum, where you can view precious excavated items for free and enjoy ancient-style experiences such as making magatama beads. The wide lawn is also ideal for picnics, perfect for drives with family or friends, or a leisurely solo walk. Be sure to experience in person a peaceful time in which nature and history are in harmony.
