ABOUT
About this spot
Umagase, on the Hosojima Peninsula in Hyuga City, Miyazaki Prefecture, is known as one of Kyushu's finest scenic spots. Columnar-jointed cliffs formed by volcanic eruptions stretch 70 m high and 200 m along the coast, a landscape that speaks to the raw power of nature. The name comes from the way the rock face resembles a horse's back. The observation deck reopened after renovation in 2022, and the new observation facility "Sukeruccha!" has a see-through glass floor at its tip. You can enjoy the thrill of peering down at the cliffs and rough waves right beneath your feet. The contrast between the blue of the Pacific Ocean spreading out in a panorama and the rugged rock face makes this a photo spot that is sure to shine on social media. The promenade is well maintained, and you can reach the scenic viewpoint in a light 10 to 15 minute walk while feeling the sea breeze. It is a perfect place whether you want to face nature quietly on a solo trip or share the thrill with friends or family. Combine your visit with the nearby Negai ga Kanau Kurusu no Umi (Cruz Sea of Wishes) for a refreshing drive around Hyuga.
