ABOUT

About this spot

Located along the beautiful coastline of Hyuga City in Miyazaki Prefecture, Kurusu no Umi ("Sea of the Cross") is a mystical scenic spot created by the forces of nature. Columnar rock was carved by wave erosion, and a huge reef was split by the waves over an area of roughly 200 m east to west and 220 m north to south. Seen from above, the cleft looks like a cross ("kurusu"), which gave the place its name. Combined with the rocky outcrop right beside the cross, the shape also resembles the kanji character "叶" (kanau, "to come true"), and the spot is known as a power spot with a lovely legend that your wish will come true if you visit. The observation deck has a "Wish-Granting Bell" for sending people's wishes to the heavens, and you can ring it facing the clear blue Hyuga-nada Sea. It is close to Umagase, with its continuous sheer cliffs, and makes an excellent stop on a drive. Whether you come on a weekend with family or friends, or want to gaze quietly at the sea on your own, it is a place where visitors of all ages, from 18 to 60 and beyond, can enjoy the beauty of nature's design. At dusk, the sea surface glitters, wrapping the scene in an even more romantic atmosphere.
