ABOUT
About Yamagata
Yamagata Prefecture is a captivating land where abundant nature and the charm of old Japan live on. Historically, the Three Mountains of Dewa, comprising Haguro-san, Gassan and Yudono-san, have long been known as a sacred place of Shugendo, and a mystical air still lingers. Yamadera (Risshaku-ji), where Matsuo Basho composed a famous haiku, is a leading power spot where climbing its 1,015 stone steps is said to dispel earthly desires. In nature, the "rime ice" seen on Zao in winter is spectacular and draws visitors from around the world. In addition, Ginzan Onsen, with its Taisho-era romantic atmosphere, lights its gas lamps at night, creating a fantastical scene as if you had traveled back in time. The food culture is very rich too. You can enjoy seasonal flavors all year round, including the nationally famous cherries (Sato Nishiki), Yonezawa beef with its fine marbling, and imoni, the autumn tradition of Yamagata. Why not spend a special moment in Yamagata, where Mogami River boat rides and famous hot springs scattered across the region bring new discoveries and relaxation every time you visit?
