ABOUT

About this spot

Known as one of Japan's Three Great Gorges, "Kankakei" is a scenic area symbolic of Shodoshima, with a row of bizarre rock formations created by volcanic activity about 13 million years ago. It has beauty in every season, but the autumn foliage is especially wonderful, and many tourists come from across Japan to see the whole gorge colored red and yellow. The top attraction is the view from the "Kankakei Ropeway" connecting the foot and the summit of the mountain. In the five-minute aerial walk that takes in sky, sea, and gorge all at once, you can enjoy the contrast of rugged rock faces and the calm Seto Inland Sea. Around the summit station are several observation decks, offering many ways to enjoy, such as praying for protection from misfortune by throwing the traditional "kawarake" clay discs and taking photos against the superb view. Hiking trails known as the "Front 12 Views" and "Back 8 Views" are also maintained, letting you feel nature up close on a roughly one-hour hike. It is a special place that moves visitors in any situation, whether a family outing, a drive with friends, or a solo refreshing trip.
