ABOUT

About this spot

"Sohonzan Zentsu-ji" in Zentsuji City, Kagawa Prefecture, is one of the three great sacred sites of Kobo Daishi Kukai, along with Koyasan and To-ji in Kyoto. The vast precinct of about 45,000 square meters is divided into two areas, "Eastern Compound (Garan)" and "Western Compound (Tanjoin)," each with a different atmosphere. The approximately 43-meter-tall "five-story pagoda" in the Eastern Compound boasts one of the largest scales among wooden pagodas in Japan and is loved as the symbol of the city. The "Kaidan Meguri," held beneath the Mieido Hall in the Western Compound, is a popular ascetic experience where visitors feel their way through a pitch-dark corridor where no light reaches, reflecting on themselves. On the grounds are giant camphor trees over a thousand years old, whose vitality will overwhelm you. Beyond the historic buildings, the seasonal scenery is also beautiful, and it is ideal for soul-searching on a solo trip or a historical stroll with family. After visiting, be sure to enjoy the local specialties "katapan" (hard bread) and Sanuki udon in the temple town.
