ABOUT
About this spot
The Chichu Art Museum on the south side of Naoshima in Kagawa Prefecture is an "underground museum" unlike any other in the world, designed by architect Tadao Ando. Most of the building is buried underground so as not to spoil the beautiful Seto Inland Sea landscape, yet natural light pours into the museum, letting you enjoy the changing expressions of light throughout the day. The museum permanently houses works by three masters: Claude Monet, James Turrell, and Walter De Maria. In particular, the gallery where you see Monet's "Water Lilies" by natural light alone and Turrell's works that frame the sky offer a special experience of facing yourself in silence. Outdoors, the "Chichu Garden," which recreates the flowers and plants Monet loved, lets you feel the changing seasons. Since tickets are strictly by advance reservation, it is ideal for solo trips, girls' trips, and dates when you want to spend a relaxed time. Immerse yourself in an extraordinary space where architecture, nature, and art merge, on Naoshima, known as a holy land of contemporary art.
