ABOUT
About this spot
Kotohira-gu, affectionately known as "Konpira-san," has long been known as a shrine to the god of the sea, and in the Edo period was called a place to visit "at least once in a lifetime." Its greatest feature is the long stone staircase up the slopes of Mt. Zozu. It is 785 steps to the main hall and a total of 1,368 steps to the inner shrine, and with each step you climb you can feel the surrounding rich nature and depth of history. On both sides of the approach, shops selling local souvenirs and restaurants line the way, letting you enjoy a stroll in a lively atmosphere. Along the way are plentiful cultural highlights, such as "Asahi-sha," designated an Important Cultural Property, and "Omote Shoin," which holds famous paintings by Maruyama Okyo. From the observation deck beside the main hall, you can see the Sanuki Plain and the beautiful Seto Inland Sea, with a breathtaking view and a sense of accomplishment that only those who make the climb can feel. It is an ideal spot for a special time, whether encouraging one another with family and friends or quietly facing yourself alone.
