ABOUT

About this spot

Marugame Castle is known as a "castle of stone walls" with a history of more than 400 years. Its main highlight is the stone walls, whose beautiful curves are known as the "Ogi no Kobai" (fan-shaped slope), and whose height is the greatest in Japan. The main keep sits atop walls reaching 60 meters in total height and is one of only 12 surviving original keeps in Japan, designated an Important Cultural Property. The path from the castle entrance to the keep is a little steep, but the panoramic view that opens up once you reach the top is exceptional. You can take in the Seto Inland Sea, the Seto Ohashi Bridge, and Mt. Iino, affectionately known as "Sanuki Fuji," while enjoying a pleasant breeze. Cherry blossoms bloom in spring, and at night you can also enjoy the castle's dreamy illuminated look. It is a perfect spot for a solo historical walk, a family picnic, or photos with friends. Inside the castle grounds there is also a facility where you can try making uchiwa, Marugame's specialty paper fans, so you can enjoy both history and culture throughout the day.
