ABOUT
About this spot
Takamatsu Castle in Takamatsu, Kagawa Prefecture, also known as "Tamamo Castle," is counted among Japan's three great water castles. Its defining feature is that seawater from the Seto Inland Sea is drawn directly into the moat. Sea bream swim in the moat, and the park is popular as a rare spot, even by national standards, where you can try "feeding the sea bream (Taigan Jojuin)." The grounds are dotted with valuable structures that retain the look of the Edo period, including the Tsukimi Yagura and Ushitora Yagura turrets, both designated Important Cultural Properties. From the restored keep foundation, you can take in the beautiful island-dotted Seto Inland Sea and the Takamatsu cityscape together. Despite its excellent location within walking distance of Takamatsu Station, the garden planted with stately pines is wrapped in stillness and lets you forget the bustle of the city. It is a classic Takamatsu sight, ideal for history fans traveling alone as well as for a leisurely weekend stroll with friends or family in the sea breeze.
