ABOUT
About Iwate
Iwate has the largest area of any prefecture on Honshu, and it is a place where nature on an overwhelming scale and deep history live side by side. Historically, the World Cultural Heritage sites of Chuson-ji and Motsu-ji in Hiraizumi are must-sees. They preserve the golden culture built by the Oshu Fujiwara clan, and the gardens that embody the Pure Land and the National Treasure Golden Hall invite visitors on an elegant journey through history. In nature, the highlights are the ria coastline of Sanriku with its complex inlets, the mystical underground lake of Ryusendo, one of Japan's three great limestone caves, and the changing colors of majestic Mount Iwate, known as "Nanbu Katafuji," through the seasons. In Hanamaki, hometown of Kenji Miyazawa, you can also step into the world of his fairy tales for a heartwarming experience. The food is not to be missed either. The "Morioka Three Great Noodles" of wanko soba, Morioka reimen and Morioka jajamen are one of the great pleasures of a trip. You can also savor the bounty of the land, from fresh Sanriku seafood to Maesawa beef, a premium brand of cattle. Why not leave the bustle of the city behind and spend a special time in Iwate, where vast scenery, warm hospitality and profound culture blend together?
