ABOUT
About this spot
When you visit Yanagawa City in Fukuoka Prefecture, the one thing you must experience is the river cruise, which lets you enjoy the atmosphere of the castle town from the water. You glide slowly along the canals (moats) originally laid out to protect Yanagawa Castle, aboard a "donko-bune" boat poled by a boatman, for about 60 to 70 minutes. Listen to the children's songs of Kitahara Hakushu sung by the boatman and to the historical commentary delivered in a lively patter, as you gaze at the green willows reflected on the water, the charming white-walled storehouses, and the seasonal flowers. It is a peaceful time that lets you forget everyday life. The boatman's masterful pole work as the boat passes just beneath bridges is true craftsmanship. In winter, the "kotatsu-bune," a boat with a heated kotatsu table, is also available, letting you enjoy the snowy scenery while staying warm. Around the landing area stand long-established restaurants serving the local specialty, "unagi no seiro-mushi" (steamed eel on rice), making it an ideal lunch spot after sightseeing. Recommended for all ages, from family trips to dates and girls' getaways with friends, it is the highlight of sightseeing in Yanagawa.
