ABOUT

About Gunma

Gunma Prefecture, long affectionately likened to "a crane in flight" because of its shape, is a land where abundant nature and history thrive. Historically, the "Tomioka Silk Mill," which supported the development of modern Japan, is a World Heritage site and conveys the atmosphere of its era to this day. The appeal of its nature is inexhaustible. Beyond the majestic scenery of the Jomo Sanzan (Mt. Akagi, Mt. Haruna, and Mt. Myogi), hiking among the alpine flowers of each season at "Oze," one of Japan's finest marshlands, is popular. In the "Minakami" area on the upper Tone River, activities such as rafting and bungee jumping are also plentiful. And Gunma is a "hot spring paradise." The yubatake of "Kusatsu Onsen," one of Japan's three great hot springs, is spectacular, and the stone-stepped street of atmospheric "Ikaho Onsen" also captivates visitors. The food is not to be missed either. With thriving wheat production, a flour-based food culture is deeply rooted, and you can enjoy simple yet profound flavors such as "Mizusawa udon," counted among Japan's three great udon varieties; "yaki manju," with its perfectly balanced sweet-savory sauce; and dishes made with the local specialty "konnyaku." With good access from the Tokyo metropolitan area, you can enjoy a trip that refreshes body and mind, whether as a day trip or an overnight stay.
