ABOUT

About Niigata

Niigata Prefecture is a captivating region where abundant nature and historic charm coexist. In terms of history, deep culture endures, from traces of its heyday as a port of call for the Kitamaebune trading ships in the Edo period to the Sado Gold Mine, now a World Heritage site. Yahiko Shrine is famous as a power spot that has drawn faith since ancient times. Its face as a "snow country" in winter is emblematic of its natural environment. Ski resorts such as Naeba and Yuzawa are popular with visitors from Japan and abroad, and the spectacular Kiyotsu Gorge is also attracting attention as a photo spot. "Koshihikari" rice, grown on the vast plains, is also highly regarded throughout the country. There is no end to the pleasures of food. Sake made from clear water and fine rice is a point of pride: the prefecture has about 90 sake breweries, the most of any prefecture in Japan. Fresh seafood from the Sea of Japan, such as nodoguro and nanban shrimp, and local dishes such as hegi soba are also superb. In summer, the Nagaoka Festival Grand Fireworks Display, one of Japan's three great fireworks festivals, lights up the night sky and overwhelms those who come to see it. Escaping the bustle of the city and savoring the beauty of each season along with superb cuisine is the real thrill of Niigata.
