ABOUT

About Kagoshima

Kagoshima Prefecture is an attractive region where abundant nature and deep history thrive. First to catch the eye is "Sakurajima," the active volcano that symbolizes the city. Its form rising from Kinko Bay is spectacular, and from the observation points you can feel its powerful heartbeat. Kirishima, one of Japan's first national parks, and the diverse remote islands such as World Heritage Yakushima and Amami-Oshima are valuable spots where you can experience unspoiled nature. Historically, the prefecture is known as the home of Saigo Takamori and Okubo Toshimichi, who were active from the end of the Edo period through the Meiji Restoration, and at historic sites such as Sengan-en you can feel the atmosphere of that era. A journey tracing the history of the Shimazu clan is also popular. The food is indispensable too. "Kagoshima black pork" with its fine-grained meat, fresh "kanpachi" amberjack, "jinbo-mochi" with its superb sweet-savory sauce, and local sweet potato shochu will win over the stomachs of visitors. After relaxing in the sand baths of Ibusuki Onsen, we recommend savoring the authentic flavors. Kagoshima, where you can experience the breath of history and the energy of the earth at the same time, is a place where you will find something new on every visit.
