ABOUT

About Miyagi

Miyagi Prefecture is the economic and cultural center of the Tohoku region, home to Sendai, known as the "City of Trees." Its history is tied to the development of the castle town of Sendai, built by the warlord Date Masamune. Splendid historic buildings that embody Date culture, such as Zuihoden and Osaki Hachimangu, are still carefully preserved today. The natural beauty is exceptional too. Matsushima, counted among Japan's Three Views, captivates visitors with its scenery of more than 260 islands large and small floating on a calm sea. You can enjoy dynamic landscapes throughout the year, including Okama, the emerald-green crater lake that symbolizes the Zao mountain range, and the autumn foliage of Naruko Gorge. Known as a treasure trove of food, Miyagi is famous for grilled beef tongue, fresh oysters raised in the rich seas of Sanriku, and seafood such as silver salmon. Local sweets like zunda mochi are also popular with visitors. Famous hot springs such as Akiu Onsen and Sakunami Onsen dot the prefecture, too, so after sightseeing in history and nature you can unwind and soothe the fatigue of travel. With the convenience of the city, abundant nature and deep history all coexisting, Miyagi is a captivating land where there is something new to discover whenever you visit.
