ABOUT

About Kanagawa

Kanagawa Prefecture is a treasure trove of tourism where you can enjoy many of Japan's varied charms at once. Historically, there is the "ancient capital of Kamakura," where the Kamakura shogunate was established in the 12th century, and historic structures such as the Great Buddha of Kotokuin and Tsurugaoka Hachimangu stand quietly amid rich greenery. Meanwhile, the port city of Yokohama brims with an exotic atmosphere that dates back to the opening of the port at the end of the Edo period, and the sophisticated scenery of "Minato Mirai 21" and Yokohama Chinatown, one of the largest in Japan, are popular. For nature and relaxation, Hakone, one of Japan's leading hot spring resorts, is ideal. There are plenty of activities to enjoy with all five senses, such as the superb view of Mt. Fuji from Lake Ashi, Owakudani where volcanic steam still rises, and art museum hopping. The "Shonan and Enoshima" area on Sagami Bay, known for marine sports, offers an open coastline and strolls around Enoshima Shrine. The food is just as appealing. Each area has its own distinctive cuisine, such as authentic dim sum in Yokohama Chinatown, fresh "shirasu-don" (whitebait rice bowls), a specialty of Kamakura and Enoshima, and Odawara's fish paste products. With excellent access from central Tokyo, the greatest charm of Kanagawa is that, whether for a day trip or a leisurely overnight stay, you will find something new each time you visit.
